Most college debate events now actually run short of topics to choose from. The lack of topics is an issue that the collegiate Debate Association (CDA) has taken on. Even if it doesn't have any content, there are organizations that get involved and help decide which topic will be used for the national championship.
One organization that has been involved in the selection of controversial, argumentative essay topics is; Hargrave and Mullaney, Inc. They set the standards for such topics and constantly monitor the activities of collegiate and university level debate events. They work with the various teams to help them determine the specific areas of debate that they want to focus on.
Students all over the country have taken on some of the controversial argumentative essay topics. They include; gay marriage, marriage equality, abortion, and even radical Islam. When a student thinks of a controversial topic, they automatically think of their first name. Often times, the topic that comes to mind is usually something that makes the person uneasy.
Unfortunately, these debates can backfire. An argumentative essay should be based off of solid evidence and a firm understanding of the facts of the issue. When a student begins to argue about the topic, they put the school in a bad light and may lead to the student losing eligibility for college or even their scholarship.
Also, when one or two students speak on a particular issue, that sends a negative message to the other students that they may not be allowed to debate on the topic or even touch the topic. So, when these situations happen, the CDA steps in to provide both parties with a venue to speak freely. They try to keep such topics as 'cottage industry'hate crimes' as much as possible, so as not to upset the rest of the students.
In the past, most controversial argumentative essay topics centered around religious issues. However, with the increasing acceptance of political and social commentary in college debate, some of the topics have become more controversial. Still, many schools do not take on controversial topics at all, and sometimes these topics are quite troubling.
With the constant competition within college debate, it seems that the issues will never be settled. The students are tired of seeing some of the topics bring controversy over the top of the school and get the students in trouble. A quality curriculum works best for a student who wants to write an argumentative essay.
